Gilbert went home to be with his Lord and Saviour very suddenly on Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at the age of 89. He leaves to cherish his memory three sons Kevin (Gladys), Floyd (Elaine), Delwin (Valerie), and one daughter Lorraine (Miles) Mayer. He will be remembered by his eight grandchildren Donaven (Amanda) Welk, Donita (Terry) Hartwick, Traci (Darren) Cybulski, Deanna (Justin) Freimark, Laurel & Dawson Welk, Corbin Mayer, and Abby (Luke) Gourlay. His seven great-grandsons Mavric, Cash & Parker Welk, Kaden & Devan Cybulski, Russell & Mitchell Hartwick and two great-granddaughters Annabell Hartwick and Ada Welk. Gilbert is predeceased by his wife Hazel and his only sister Pearl (Irvin) Walters.
Gilbert Henry Welk was born on June 16, 1928 in the Pembroke Hospital. He attended public school in Rockingham next door until grade 10. On August 1, 1951 he married Hazel Hartwig and resided in Rockingham where they would raise their four children Kevin, Floyd, Lorraine and Delwin.
Dad was a hard working man who farmed all of his life and worked in the bush as well as numerous other jobs including plowing the township roads with the tractor. He drove the school bus for 24 years (1968 - 1992) to Madawaska Valley District High School.
In 1977 he was elected to Municipal Council for Brudenell Lyndock, where he served his community faithfully until he was elected as reeve in January 1991. He served as Reeve through amalgamation with Raglan Township until the year 2000.
A devoted christian, Gilbert was involved first in Rosenthal Evangelical United Brethren Church and later held many positions such as Trustee, Sunday School Teacher, Deacon and Board Chair at Grace Evangelical Missionary Church in Killaloe.
All are welcome to pay their respects to Gilbert at Zohr Family Funeral Home, Killaloe, On Sunday, February 18, 2018 from 2-4 and 7-9pm and Monday after 12:30pm. A Funeral Service will be held at Grace Evangelical Missionary Church, Killaloe, Monday at 2pm. Spring interment at Grace Evangelical Missionary Cemetery.
