Obituary for Paul Smalley

Paul Smalley
Retired Master Corporal

Passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on April 20, 2018 in Ottawa, Ontario at the age of 70. Paul was born in Newmarket, Ontario to the late Ross and Freda Smalley.
Paul will be forever missed by his loving wife, Julia Smalley. Loving father to Elizabeth, Rebecca, Daniel, and Jessica (Marc). Cherished stepfather to Gina, Chuck (Karen), Lori (Grant) and Curt (Diana). Proud grandpa to Summer, Teegen and Ryder, step-grandpa to Curtis (Sheena), Jessica (Ryan), Stephanie, Ryan (Jennifer), Ashley and Carly (Joey), and great grandpa to Maddie and Brooklyn.
Paul will be remembered for his service in the Canadian Military which saw him posted oversees on several United Nations Peacekeeping missions. Following his retirement, Paul settled in the Ottawa Valley with Julia, where he pursued a number of hobbies including: gardening (with an ability to grow an abundance of tomatoes); cooking fantastic meals (and exploring new recipes for his vegetarian daughters); reading crime and mystery novels (and the local weekly flyers to see what specials were on at the grocery store); feeding the birds and watching the wildlife, and lovingly caring for his animals. Paul could often be found, wearing one of his signature plaid shirts, making the rounds at the local grocery store and chatting with his friends along the way. He had recently developed a passion for orchids and had developed an impressive collection.
Paul’s sense of humour and love for his family will be greatly missed. His family will continue to cherish these memories and believes that “what we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes part of us” (Helen Keller).
Paul’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the doctors and the nursing staff in the Intensive Care Unit at Ottawa’s Queensway Carleton Hospital. Your care and compassion will never be forgotten. All professional arrangements have been entrusted to the care and compassion of Zohr Family Funeral Home, Renfrew. At Paul's request cremation has taken place and private family services will be held at a later date. In Paul’s memory and in lieu of flowers, donations to the Renfrew Victoria Hospital, the Queensway Carleton Hospital, or an animal rescue of your choice, can be made online at www.zohrfuneralhome.com and would be greatly appreciated by his family.
