Obituary

Donald Edward Burton (February 17, 1930 – July 26, 2019)
Peacefully at Marianhill in Pembroke. Pre-deceased by his mother Catherine, father Arthur, brother James. Survived by wife Shirley (nee Dier), daughter Susanna (Bryan), son Christopher, daughter Emily, grandchildren Gwendolyn Gillingham (Bethany), Miranda Gillingham (Julian), Jeremy Gillingham. Don was a talented singer, as head choirboy at Christ Church Cathedral in Ottawa, then as a mature baritone, having studied with the great George Lambert in Toronto. Don chose education as his career, retiring in 1987 from the position of Principal of High School of Commerce in Ottawa. Following retirement, Don and Shirley built a new house at Round Lake. His love for music inspired all three of his children to study music seriously.

On behalf of the Erskine family we wish to offer our condolences to the Burton family. We all have many happy memories of seeing Don at Round Lake. He was a good man, very friendly and kind. A very good and devoted father and husband. May he rest in peace. He will be missed.

Donald Burton's wonderful voice is still remembered with great affection in Christ Church Cathedral, Ottawa. His was both a leading voice and a cheerful personality, and he helped other choirs around the city too. We also remember his children's participation in the choirs and services at the Cathedral; there was the happy evening when many of the choir went to hear Chris Burton's graduation piano recital at Ottawa U. immediately following choir practice.
